In 2009, the anti-aging game changed. Health Canada approved Juvederm for the treatment of lines, wrinkles and folds around the midface. It also approved other hyaluronic acid (HA)-based dermal fillers from the same manufacturer, Allergan, for various purposes. Today, our experts at Guelph Medical Laser and Skin Centre in Guelph, ON discuss some of the many benefits of this filler and who may be considered a good candidate for injections.
What Are the Benefits of Juvederm?
Augmenting Hollow Cheeks
One of the most popular uses for Juvederm is the non-invasive augmentation of hollow cheeks with Voluma XC. This formula was designed to provide a dramatic increase in volume and is very effective when the individual considering treatment has experienced extreme weight loss due to severe illness.
However, this formula doesn’t just add volume to hollow cheeks, shaving years off of your apparent age for up to two years. When injected into strategic locations, it can also enhance the appearance of your cheekbones, making you look more feminine at the same time as it helps you look more youthful. Finally, this treatment can lift sagging cheek skin by adding volume to the cheeks and encouraging the production of strong, healthy collagen.
Augmenting Thin Lips
This popular dermal filler can also be used to augment thin lips. If you have particularly thin lips, you should opt for a more robust formula, Ultra XC. This incredibly innovative formula provides a couple of significant advantages for individuals with particularly thin lips. For example, the cross-linking technology used in the manufacturing process results in extremely durable improvements to the shape and texture of the lips.
Correcting Asymmetrical Lips
If you’re pretty satisfied with the volume in your lips, but you’re concerned about asymmetry, Volbella XC is more appropriate for you. While durable, the hyaluronic acid molecules are smaller than the molecules in Ultra XC. Therefore, more subtle changes can be made. When the volume of your lips is already fairly satisfactory, the results of the treatment will look more natural than they would if you opted for Ultra XC.
Erasing Nasolabial Folds
Another benefit of this incredibly versatile dermal filler is that it can treat nasolabial folds. Nasolabial folds are most often treated by Botox because they are most often caused by muscle hyperactivity. However, they can also be caused by volume loss in the skin between your nose and mouth.
These moderate-to-severe wrinkles will not be relaxed away because there is no muscle hyperactivity causing them. Rather, they can only be treated by a dermal filler, such as Vollure XC. During your initial consultation, we will assess your nasolabial folds and identify their cause. You may need a combination of dermal filler injections and neuromodulator injections.
Erasing Marionette Lines
This versatile dermal filler can also treat marionette lines, smoker’s lines and other lines that form within the perioral region of your face. There are several formulas that can be injected around your mouth to smooth away lines for over a year at a time. However, the most effective formula for improving the appearance of your skin around your mouth is Ultra XC.
Another incredible benefit of this injectable anti-aging treatment is the durability of the results. While individual experiences vary, the results of this treatment usually last between six and 18 months from the time the final results are visible. At around 18 months, you may find that the results start to fade and it may be several months after this the results fade to the point that you need a follow-up treatment.
To avoid your results fading to the point that they are no longer satisfactory and having to schedule a follow-up appointment and wait two weeks for the new final results, we recommend coming in three to 12 months after your last session for a preventative maintenance treatment. You will need a smaller dose to maintain your ideal results and they will remain optimal for several more months.
Another incredibly exciting benefit of this safe, effective dermal filler is that you will see the final results of treatment quickly. You will see an immediate improvement in your appearance because the hyaluronic acid is injected into strategic areas of the skin at the most beneficial depths. However, you will also notice that your results continue to improve for seven to 14 days after your treatment as the filler continues to soften and settle into your skin.
Who Is a Good Candidate for This Injectable?
Despite the many benefits of this durable dermal filler, it is not right for everyone. The FDA has approved this dermal filler for most healthy adults over the age of 21. However, it isn’t effective for the treatment of every type of wrinkle. For example, it will not erase wrinkles caused by muscle hyperactivity rather than volume loss. Here’s a closer look at who is a good candidate for this type of anti-aging treatment.
People Who Don’t Smoke
The best candidate for this type of dermal filler is an individual between the ages of 22 and 65 who does not smoke. If you smoke, we strongly encourage you to stop smoking for two weeks before each treatment session. Smoking, or consuming any other tobacco product, elevates your blood pressure and weakens your collagen.
It is extremely important that you avoid activities that can elevate your blood pressure, like smoking, drinking alcohol and consuming over 200 mg of caffeine in a 24-hour period before your treatment session. This is because high blood pressure can affect your experience during your recovery process. You should also avoid anything that can elevate your blood pressure during the first few days following your treatment session.
People Who Aren’t Pregnant or Nursing
Hyaluronic acid is a chemical compound found naturally in the body. Nevertheless, no research has been conducted to test the safety of HA injections in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or actively trying to conceive, hold off on treatment until you have your baby and your baby is weaned off of your breastmilk completely.
People Who Can Follow Post-Treatment Instructions
It is also incredibly important that you are willing and able to follow all post-treatment care instructions to be considered a good candidate for these injections. Since this is a non-invasive anti-aging treatment, there aren’t many things you have to do or avoid after treatment. However, each thing you must avoid after treatment is extremely important and will affect how quickly you will see the results of treatment and how long those results last.
During your initial consultation, we will provide you with a comprehensive list of instructions that you must adhere to before and after your treatment sessions. We’ve already touched on avoiding anything that affects blood viscosity or pressure. You should also make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep and staying hydrated. The more rested and hydrated you are, the sooner you will see the final results of treatment.
People Without Significant Medical Conditions
To be considered a good candidate for this treatment, it is also important that you are free from significant medical conditions. Included in most variations of this dermal filler is a bit of lidocaine. While lidocaine is perfectly safe for most healthy adults, it is not appropriate for individuals who have certain medical conditions, including heart disease, neurological disorders or a history of traumatic brain injury.
What if My Lines and Wrinkles Are Caused by Muscle Hyperactivity?
If your lines, wrinkles and folds are caused by muscle hyperactivity, we highly recommend receiving Botox injections. Another great benefit of Juvederm is that it can be performed at the same time as Botox. Once we identify the cause of your lines, wrinkles and folds we will review your medical history to verify which anti-aging treatments you are healthy enough to receive.
If you are in good health and at least 22 years of age, we will develop a treatment plan for you. Whether you want to schedule your Botox and HA-based dermal filler injections during the same session, we will create a tailored treatment plan that will work with you and your schedule.
How Long Do Botox Injections Take?
Botox injections take mere minutes to complete. How long your session will take depends on how many injections you need per location and how many locations you are looking to treat in a single session.
However, you shouldn’t expect the injections to add more than 15 minutes to your dermal filler treatment time. Again, we will discuss all of this with you during your initial consultation once we determine the best course of action to address your concerns.
How Safe Is Botox? Will It Freeze My Features?
Botox is extremely safe. In fact, it has been Health Canada-approved for the treatment of wrinkles, like frown lines, worry lines and crow’s feet since 2001. Before that, it was approved by Health Canada for the treatment of cerebral palsy, blepharospasms and other facial conditions in 1990. In addition to its track record of safety spanning several decades, it will not freeze your features.
This treatment will not freeze your features because it only blocks some of the electrical signals sent from your brain to your nerve endings. In short, it prevents muscle hyperactivity but your brain can still communicate the command to smile, frown or squint when such actions are appropriate.
How Soon Will I See the Results?
You may start to notice the results of Botox between 48 and 72 hours following your treatment session. However, it can take a week or two for your muscle hyperactivity to stop completely so you can see a smooth, youthful complexion not exacerbated by facial expressions. You can see the final results of treatment faster by exercising the muscles in the treatment area regularly for the first five days after treatment.
How Long Will the Results of Treatment Last?
The results of Botox usually last three or four months when the injectable is used to correct cosmetic concerns, like nasolabial folds, crow’s feet and forehead folds. However, the more regularly you receive treatment, the longer your results will last. This happens because when your muscles aren’t overused, they weaken.
