There are several different treatments for removing problematic veins. Vein stripping is a type of surgery in which the surgeon pulls the vein from the leg. Other treatments such as sclerotherapy are minimally-invasive, and the affected vein is gradually absorbed by the body and disappears. Most people prefer this method because it is less invasive, has no downtime and is very effective at removing unsightly veins.
Problematic veins in the legs are the result of insufficient blood flow from the feet to the heart. There are several reasons why this may happen, and the result is swollen, twisted, bulging or web-like veins that can be seen just beneath the surface of the skin. When this happens, the majority of individuals want them removed.
Vein stripping is one of the most common surgeries, and is usually performed under general anesthesia. An incision is made in the groin area, and the vein is closed at its origin. Once the vein is tied off, several incisions are made near the vein and a special tool is used to pull up the vein and strip it out. This type of surgery can leave scars and possibly cause swelling and numbness.
Sclerotherapy is considered by many to be a better option for removing problematic veins. One of the main reasons is because it is significantly less invasive, so the risk of negative side effects is minimal. The vein is simply injected with a special solution that irritates the lining of the vein, which then collapses and is gradually absorbed by the surrounding tissue. The blood that normally flowed through that vein naturally goes to another healthy vein. As a result, the vein is no longer visible.
Only minimal discomfort is involved with sclerotherapy, and no recovery time is required. It has been in use since the 1930s and is very effective at eliminating problematic veins. You will be able to go to work or resume other activities immediately after your session. You may be asked to avoid taking ibuprofen, aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs for up to 72 hours; however, you may take Tylenol. Multiple sessions may be necessary in order to achieve the desired results.
