Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is an effective treatment for wrinkled, discolored and otherwise damaged skin. It can be employed as a skin rejuvenation treatment and for the reduction in the appearance of age spots, acne scars and even freckles. The treatment involves the creation of controlled channels. These are micro-openings that run from the surface of the skin to a depth of up to three millimeters. The Dermapen® is one of the most commonly used instruments for the creation of these channels. Properly performed, microneedling with the Dermapen® can result in smoother skin that is more evenly toned with less wrinkling and fewer regional discolorations.
How Does the Dermapen® Work?
The Dermapen® is a small instrument that runs on battery power. The pen is attached via a power cord to a small control pad. The pad controls allow us to change the depth to which the micro-needles will penetrate.
The Dermapen® is our instrument of choice when we are treating a small portion of the facial skin. The micro-needles are very close together, so the area of channel wounds created is less than one-quarter inch in diameter.
The Science Behind Microneedling
The tiny channel wounds created by the Dermapen® act as a gateway from the skin surface to the subdermal tissues. They are like small injuries, so the body responds by sending nutrients to the affected area. The channels fill up with lymphatic fluid, liquid scar tissue and blood, which is a good thing.
This quickly stimulates the production of collagen in the lower dermal layers. Any topically applied nutrient-laden serums quickly seep into the openings, meaning that transport of these nutrients to the subdermal tissues is accelerated.
When the channels heal, the tissue created by the body is healthier than the tissue that was replaced. The result is smoother skin that is full of collagen and elastin. The tiny openings disappear rapidly, so there’s no possibility of visual red spots once the channels have healed.
In most cases, we schedule a series of treatment sessions that are spaced a set amount of time apart. The rejuvenation process continues long after this, however. Most of our clients report continued improvement in skin tone and skin texture for months after the last treatment is performed.
