Laser hair removal is a popular treatment to permanently remove or reduce unwanted body hair. During laser hair removal at our office in Guelph, a laser is applied to the area to be treated. The pigmented hair follicles absorb the laser’s energy and are destroyed. The procedure can be used on almost any part of the body.
LightSheer Diode vs. Cutera CoolGlide®
The LightSheer Diode laser emits light at a wavelength that precisely targets melanin in hair follicles to effectively and safely eliminate hair growth. It has a built-in cooling technology to protect the skin and improve the comfort of the patient. However, the LightSheer is not always a good choice for individuals with darker skin because the pigments in the skin render it less effective in targeting the hair follicles.
The Cutera CoolGlide® is an Nd:YAG laser, not a diode laser, and it emits light at a different wavelength, but it works in a similar fashion to the LightSheer. It is said to be more effective for darker skin than the LightSheer laser. Of course, it is best to consult our experienced practitioner in Guelph, who can evaluate your skin and hair color and provide advice on which system is best.
A Look at the Treatment
Small areas such the upper lip can typically be treated in just minutes, and large areas such as the legs may take longer. Most people require a series of treatment sessions at our office in Guelph at regular intervals to completely eliminate all hair from the targeted areas because the treatment only targets actively growing hair follicles.
For a set amount of time prior to the procedure, it is important to avoid sun exposure and self-tanners, and avoid waxing, plucking, and electrolysis; however, shaving is ok. The area should be carefully protected from the sun in the weeks following the treatment as well.
Adverse events are extremely rare. When the laser hair removal procedure is performed by a properly trained individual, it is considered to be safe.
