Spider veins are tiny, thread-like veins that appear on the surface of your skin. They can be blue, purple or red and get their name from their web-like appearance. Increased pressure causes the veins to be perpetually dilated. They are most common in the buttock area, thigh area, calves, and ankles. However, any part of the body can be affected. At Guelph Medical Laser & Skin Centre, we offer spider vein treatment. One of the most effective and widely used is laser therapy. Here are some questions that our patients frequently ask about the treatment:
What Happens During Spider Vein Treatment?
Laser therapy is a relatively quick procedure that is normally finished within an hour or less. Local anesthesia may be used. Laser light heats and destroys the veins without harm to the skin and surrounding tissues.
How Does the Treatment Work?
The laser penetrates the skin and targets blood vessels. It causes coagulation of the blood within the vessels. The vessels then collapse. The remnants are absorbed by your system within weeks. Each person’s experience varies. The treatment area will be numb. However, you may feel a tingling at the treatment site when the laser is being used.
How Should I Prepare?
It is typically best to avoid sun exposure, alcohol, aspirin, and smoking during a set amount of time prior to the treatment.
Am I a Candidate?
Every person is different. You will receive a personal assessment to determine if the spider vein treatment will be right for you.
How Many Treatments are Needed?
The number of treatments needed depends on the prevalence of your spider veins. Most patients need a series of treatment sessions.
Will the Treatment Cure Me?
Currently, spider veins cannot be cured. We can remove existing veins, and if more appear, we can treat those as well.
When Can I Return to Work?
You should be able to return to your daily activities immediately following the treatment.
When Will I See Results?
Results are not immediate. You will see results from each treatment within weeks. When doing a course of treatments, your condition should continue to improve following each session.
What are My Other Treatment Options?
Sclerotherapy and Intense Pulse Light Therapy are other spider vein treatment options. Most patients are very satisfied with the results of their spider vein treatment. It is often a relief not to feel as if you must hide your veins. Spider vein treatment is more effective and assessable than ever before.
