Even after dieting and exercise, many people find themselves left with pockets of stubborn fat – a belly pouch, dimply thighs, or excessively padded buttocks. Genetics and hormones often defeat people’s best efforts to remove those stubborn fat deposits. Surgical liposuction is an option for this cosmetic issue, but many people are reluctant to undergo invasive surgical procedures in order to avoid pain, side effects, and scarring.
CoolSculpting is a non-invasive, non-surgical alternative to liposuction. It uses controlled cooling to kill fat cells in a process called Cryolipolysis®. Skin cells are much more resistant to the effects of cold than fat cells, so applying localized cold to the skin kills the underlying fat cells without damaging the skin. The process is carefully controlled to avoid frostbite, and once the fat cells are frozen, they are removed by the body as natural waste. It takes about two months for the effects of a treatment to become fully apparent, with fat loss continuing for up to six months after treatment.
What to Expect
During a CoolSculpting procedure, the area to be treated is drawn in by a strong vacuum and held between two cooling panels that freeze the tissue. Sensors in the panels precisely monitor the exact temperature of the tissues being treated. An area about the size of a person’s hand is treated during each application, and each application takes about one hour to complete.
Multiple parts of the body can be treated during one session, but each area can only be treated once per session. Getting both “love handles” treated would take about two hours, and getting the entire lower abdomen area treated would take around three hours. Each treatment destroys about 25 percent of the fat cells present in the treated area, meaning some areas may need several treatments to produce the desired results. Results of CoolSculpting will develop over time. Repeated treatments can be scheduled every two to six months.
Temporary redness, numbness, and bruising may occur after a CoolSculpting procedure. These effects generally go away after a few days. No long-term adverse effects have been reported to date. There is no recovery time or downtime after a treatment; patients can immediately return to their normal activities.
Are the Results Permanent?
Once fat cells have been destroyed, they are gone permanently. However, with improper diet and lack of exercise, the remaining fat cells in the body and even in the treated area may enlarge and compromise the results.
Is This a Substitute for Weight Loss?
CoolSculpting is not a substitute for dieting and exercise, nor can it be used to remove large amounts of fatty tissue or deep abdominal fatty deposits. It is very effective for removing stubborn, localized deposits of subcutaneous fat that remain after dieting and exercise.
